A court in South Korea has ruled that Microsoft infringed a patent held by a Korean company for automatic translation of documents from within MS Office applications. In current versions of MS Office, users can obtain machine translations of an entire document with one (right) click of a mouse. The automatic translation is performed online and is displayed in a separate browser window that pops up. The translation is done in partnership with Worldlingo. The Korean company is suing MS for a reported US$75 Million.

Despite the court ruling against Microsoft, and despite motions that would result in suspension of sales of MS Office applications in South Korea, attorneys for Microsoft are confident that the infringement ruling will ultimately be rejected. What remains unclear at this point is whether Microsoft will have to buckle under and settle the matter out of court.
