A Canadian House of Commons committee is requesting that Health Canada (the Canadian national health system) translate all of its research on silicone gel-filled breast implants into French at a cost of CAD$56 million (about US$49 million). This motion has stirred a debate in the House of Commons, with some Canadian lawmakers citing that this constitutes a waste of taxpayer's money.
The move for translation comes at the heels of the department's decision last month to grant two companies licences to market the implants in Canada. 65,000 pages of research would need to be copied and translated before it is given to the Commons health committee. Opponents to the translation bill have stated that nobody would read 65,000 pages of translated material on a topic which has been researched completely.
