The Sun, an online newspaper from Rhode Island, reported Friday that the Naval Submarine Base New London is going to establish a National Virtual Translation Center (NVTC) on the base in the next month. The center will translate both classified and non-classified documents for all of the intelligence gathering agencies in the United States. It would join with centers in 39 states around the nation, established when it became clear the Department of Defense did not have enough translating capacity.
Residents of the local area with language skills would have the chance to work for the center on an hourly basis after receiving security clearance and being certified as a translator. Non-classified work could be handled from the translators home using the internet, while translators would have to go to a special office on the base to handle classified translations.
This will mark the first time one of the translation centers is located on a Navy base. They have previously been located on Army and Marine bases.
