(AP) The US Army has discharged Sergeant Bleu Copas, an Arabic language specialist who is also homosexual. The US Armed Forces has a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy which prohibits asking service members about their sex lives, but requires discharging anyone who openly acknowledges that they are gay. Copas, who admits being gay, said that although he never acknowledged the fact to his superiors, a campaign of anonymous letters were what caused his discharge.
It is estimated that since the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was initiated, about 300 service members with important language skills have been discharged. 55% of these 300 linguists were proficient in Arabic. Following the 9/11 attacks, the US military has increased its recuitment of Arabic languages linguists and translators.
