The Virginia Department of Health website reports that 11% of Virginia residents over age 5 speak a primary language other than English. In order to provide tools to help health care professionals peovide better care to non English speakers, the Virginia Department of Health website (http://www.clasactvirginia.vdh.virginia.gov) has launched some new Language Resources web pages, including a list of commonly used health care phrases translated into Spanish. The list might be translated into 24 other languages in the future, according to a health department news release. Information on and links to other resources also are available on the site. For example, someone looking for information on many kinds of cancer can find brochures translated into a dozen Asian languages.
