BruneiDirect.com -- The Language and Literature Bureau is a Brunei dar Salaam government organisation that has been given the authority to implement the national language plan in support of the country's constitution.
Acting Director of Language and Literature Bureau, Dr Mataim Bakar said this when officiating the 4th "Pairama Bahasa & Budaya Melayu" organised by the Malay Language and MIB Department of St Andrew's School in the capital.
Since Malay is the country's official language, he said it is important for every citizen of the country to be able to speak fluently and write in Malay and to use it in their daily conversation.

On 4.28.06 the Google Research Blog discussed Google's approach to Machine Translation tools development: they use a statistical approach to MT as opposed to the rules-based approach used by other leading MT vendors. The statistical approach involves a method referred to as corpora: a very large number of translations (Billions of words, according to Google) are fed into a computer and aligned, source language to target language. The computer can then perform analysis of the translation structure, language morphology and other factors. The rules-based approach involves reducing the structure of a language, grammar and vocabulary, into a mathematical model that can be expressed as a set of software code.
Google's blog claims that their approach yields the best quality and invites users to test their Arabic translation tool to see for themselves. See http://translate.google.com/translate_t?langpair=ar%7Cen.
