In a 3.31.06 article that appeared in the Yemen Times online edition, it was reported that increasing demand for translation services has brought a dramatic increase in the number of translation agencies in Yemen. Translation offices in Yemen offer various types of translation, especially commercial translation. They offer translation services for individuals, firms and governmental institutions. More than any other languages, most translations offered are English and Arabic.
The problem, according to the article, is that many of the new translation companies offer an unacceptable level of translation, with poor writing and even spelling/grammar mistakes common. And to make matters worse, many of these incompetent agencies make false claims about their expertise and bill themselves as providers of "authorized translations." This has raised some concern at UNESCO, who is the sole authority in Yemen for accrediting translators. UNESCO officials monitor authorized translation offices regularly in order to maintain the high translation quality standards required. When UNESCO officials receive complaints about incompetent translation companies, they file a complaint with the Yemen government Culture office.
Unlike other Arab speaking countries such as Egypt and Jordan, Yemen lacks firms specialized in translation services. There are also no University level training available in translation.
