March 24, 2006. When a top French businessman began addressing the EU's 25 government leaders in English, the "language of business," French president Jacques Chirac stood up and left the meeting in protest over what he perceived to be an affront to the French language and its people.
This incident will not come as a shock to Francophones and followers of French culture. France has a long history of protecting its language from infiltration of foreign language words. The Académie Française was established in 1635 for this purpose. More recent attempts at French language protectionism include a 2005 initiative by the French government to develop a French language search engine to combat the domination of Google in France.
