Is it Reliable? Many translation companies use Trados to perform word count of files, for the purpose of preparing price quotes and Purchase Orders (PO). In principle, the tool is excellent. You open the Translation Memory (TM), select the file format, select the files and click. A log file is generated with the word count, including the number of new words, matches and fuzzies. Sounds great, right? But in truth, there are bugs in the program that make the Trados analysis tool highly unreliable. In fact, I know of a few horror stories in which translation agencies lost money because they gave a low quote based on the incorrect Trados analysis. So what can you do to avoid losses? After Trados finishes running the analysis, check to make sure that no errors in the log file. Trados displays a message if it was unsuccessful in analysing a file. If such a message is displayed, go back and redo the analysis. Cross check the word count in another application for each file. I know that this is highly time consuming, especially if you have many files, but to repeat, the Trados analysis tool is not reliable enough. You can use MS Word (if it is a Word file). Or you can use Practicount or a similar application. If the word count is off slightly, that is OK. Different applications count words in different ways. But if Trados tells you that a file is 800 words and MS Word tells you it has 20,000 words, then that is a problem. Write to the developers of Trados, SDL, and report bugs in the analysis tool when you find them. A reputable company like SDL will certainly correct the bug in their next release.
