Hungarian Language Facts

Hungarian is spoken by about 10 million people in Hungary, 1½ million in Rumania, and smaller minorities in Yugoslavia and Slovakia. It is one of the Finno-Ugric languages, which include Finnish, Estonian, and a number of languages spoken in the Russia but its closest relatives are several obscure languages spoken in Siberia. Unlike most languages in Europe, it is not derived from German, nor Latin, nor Slavic influences. Linguists have traced the origins of Hungarian back to peoples living in the Urals area of Russia.

The Hungarians call their language Magyar. It is considered extremely difficult for foreigners to learn, with its vocabulary largely from Asia and its grammar containing a number of complex features not to be found in other Western languages. Hungarian is an agglutinative language, meaning that it relies heavily on suffixes and prefixes. It uses the Roman alphabet and the alphabet is phonetic. The many vowel sounds in spoken Hungarian are indicated by acute accents, umlauts, and the unique double acute accent which appears over o and u. Pronunciation is also very easy, especially compared to other neighbouring languages like Czech, German, and Russian.
